Dear FIABCI Members,

Welcome to this issue of the FIABCI Newsletter.

As you will read, FIABCI has been extremely active within the global real estate community. We are involved with positive change with a continued commitment towards a more proactive stance and a broader vision for our Federation within the global real estate industry. We have successfully focused on the international business community in relationship to the events and opportunities we are offering our members throughout the world. These factors have continued to position our Federation as an influential global force and a cohesive Federation made up of members with whom I am proud to work alongside.

We have a vibrant schedule of upcoming FIABCI programs. Among the events planned for the immediate future are our FIABCI World Congress, APREC and the FIABCI December Business Meetings which will be held in Brussels. The most timely event to address at the moment is the FIABCI World Congress which will take place May 26-31 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. You will find registration information within the newsletter. Please save the date and register as soon as possible. The early bird registration deadline is this month, March 31. The World Congress theme will focus on “Urbanization: Perils or Prosperity?” and will set the foundation for participants to become involved in an international discussion about urbanization, current and future trends, how our global society will adapt to changes and how it will impact our world. Please note that Malaysia will be imposing a 5VAT (called GST) at 6% beginning April 1 so you will want to be sure to register immediately.

As you will read, FIABCI was recently at MIPIM. MIPIM, one of the leading real estate conferences in the world, brings together the most influential leaders for all international property sectors including commercial, residential, retail, healthcare, industrial, sport logistics and provides opportunities to access the best development projects and sources of capital worldwide. FIABCI had a wonderful presence during the 4-days of innovative exhibitions, insightful conferences and intensive business networking. It was a great opportunity to meet FIABCI leaders, network, conduct business and socialize.

Also, during MIPIM, I participated in a panel discussion titled “Creating Market Confidence through International Standards.” We focused on the major cross-industry initiative to establish international standards for real estate which will help to “de-risk property markets” and enhance the services provided by professionals throughout the world. My fellow panelists included Peter Bolton King FRICS, RICS Global Residential Director and Karin Barthelmes-Wehr, Corporate Secretary, German Property Federation.

I have always felt that new opportunities continuously arise and new possibilities can be around the corner if we take advantage of them. As you will read, our committees and councils are active and addressing the diverse needs of our Federation. Our Federation has implemented several innovative programs and new initiatives consistent with our mission focusing on advocacy, education, networking and business development. And we have successfully encouraged the involvement of our Principal Members with our efforts in both the International Ethics Coalition and the International Property Measurement Standards Coalition.

Some of our recent involvement includes:

  • International Ethics Coalition
FIABCI is participating as part of a coalition of real estate organizations which will create and promote a new International Code of Ethics to ensure global professionalism designed to protect the public interest in global property markets. In February of this year , FIABCI Past World President Tony Grant was elected to serve as Deputy Chair of the Coalition. He joins Peter Bolton King (RICS) who will serve as Chair of Trustees and Richard Berkemeier (ASA) who will serve as Executive Secretary/Treasurer.
  • International Property Measurement Standard (IPMS) for Office Buildings
FIABCI is serving an active role within The International Property Measurement Standards Coalition (IPMSC), an initiative to define an international standard for measuring property. Developed by a coalition of organisations and professionals from around the world, IPMSC will establish, for the first time, a single property measurement standard which will provide a consistent and transparent method for measuring property. The first initiative undertaken was to develop a standard which will provide a common language for measuring offices across international markets, benefiting real estate practitioners including investors, lenders, agents, valuers and occupiers. IPMS for Office Buildings will benefit the way property assets are managed and, ultimately, how financial decisions are made by investors, corporate occupiers, buyers and sellers. This initiative is being lead by Terry Dunkin, FIABCI World Council of Experts President and the FIABCI Representative to IPMSC.
  • FIABCI and the World Bank’s Doing Business Report
FIABCI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the World Bank Group’s “Doing Business” to collaborate and obtain vital information for the Doing Business Survey which focuses on global indicators in specific economies throughout the world. For the past 14 years, the annual World Bank Doing Business report has analyzed and ranked several global indicators from 189 economies. FIABCI Past World President Enrico Campagnoli, along with the FIABCI Legislative & Environmental Committee and the FIABCI International Organizations Committee, is currently spearheading the involvement of our members with this groundbreaking survey.
  • FIABCI and the United Nations
Consistent work with the United Nations since 1954 reveals FIABCI’s firm and lasting commitment to real property issues. FIABCI expands its influence through its vital work with the United Nations participating in programs which make a positive impact throughout the world. FIABCI is presently focusing its efforts with the Global Compact Cities Program.

During March 26-27, FIABCI-USA will join Academic Member, the “George Washington (“GW”) University School of Business’ Center for Real Estate and Urban Analysis” and presenting sponsor “VIVA Group” for their inaugural global real estate conference. The GW Conference will be followed by a FIABCI Day at the United Nations. The UN Day begins with a guided Tour that includes the Security Council Chambers, the Delegates Artifact Exhibit and the newly restored General Assembly Hall and follows with a luncheon that will feature speakers from international development organizations including the International Monetary Fund’s Global Housing Watch, the Center for International Private Enterprise and their promotion of Democracy and Private Enterprise around the world, and the World Bank’s Doing Business report. Register Now for Security Clearance. Deadline is Tuesday, March 24th.

We certainly hope you will utilize your membership by attending our programs and becoming involved. Because of your involvement and participation, our Federation continues to grow in both size and influence. Please feel free to reach out to me, to the FIABCI Secretariat or your FIABCI Chapter to learn how you can become more involved within our Federation. And please check our Table of Contents to learn about the many other innovative programs and activities taking place.

While this year has provided great opportunities for our members and vibrant possibilities for our Federation, it has brought with it an abundance of sadness with the loss of outstanding FIABCI leaders, Mr. Willy Egeli and Mr. Ir. F. Teguh Satria. Both Mr. Egeli and Mr. Satria generously contributed and brought to our Federation brilliant leadership, strategic direction, kindness and humility and will be remembered for their profound impact on our Federation and our members. Our condolences are sent to their family, friends and colleagues and to their respective FIABCI Chapters. We honor their memories and continue forward remembering the example and the impact that their leadership has provided our Federation.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to our FIABCI Board, our leaders, the FIABCI staff and all of our members for their continued support of our Federation. I encourage you to continue to get involved and stay involved. I look forward to working with all of our members to address the issues of relevant importance within the global real estate industry.

Clearly it is our diversity that is our strength and I welcome the opportunity to join with all of you towards strengthening FIABCI even more.

Kindest Regards,

Robyn Waters
FIABCI World President
